While it feels like the week has gone by pretty fast, its also feels surreal that I am now a PhD student…AHHHH!
Monday and the beginning of Tuesday were spent running around getting paperwork done. I opened my German bank account and got all kinds of liability insurances, these Germans love insurance.
On Tuesday afternoon, my PI drove me up to Freising, where the main campus that I am associated with is located. He had a meeting schedule prior to the seminar we had to attend so I walked around to finish up more paperwork, with the secretary, Dorothea. She is the nicest woman and has made this process so much easier for me.
The seminar was interesting, the professor presenting was from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, where my UCD PI used to work, small scientific world, eh? After the seminar, there was a meet and greet hour with beer and food. I also got to discuss moving my mice over to the Freising campus. Backstory…So, when I originally applied to TUM, back in April, I had expressed interest in working with Dr. Dirk Haller. He specializes in GI inflammation and nutrition. I felt slightly disappointed that things hadn’t worked out for me to work in his lab, but was excited about working with Michael Quante (my current PI) none the less. Turns out I WILL be working with Dirk Haller, my mice and major inflammation work will be done in his lab and he will be on my PhD committee. Good stuff! since I admire his work and I cited him a bunch in my MS thesis. I am sure you all know what I’m talking about, since you read my thesis cover to cover.
My lab mate Viki was kind enough to drive me back to Munich, since Michael didn’t want to socialize with the PhD students and had to get back to his kids.

Wednesday was my first full day in lab. I wasn’t super productive, I read a lot of papers and drank a lot of coffee. It seems like every time someone in my lab is thirsty they all rally for coffee. Our kitchen/breakroom has 4 fancyschmancy coffee makers that brew amazing, strong coffee, the kind I can only drink once a week! Upon suggestion from Steffen, I bought some tea bags so I can still socialize but not consume so much coffee.
Thursday was similar to Wednesday…more reading and we had our Journal Club meeting. I will be presenting at next week’s JC…woo hoo! I packed a sandwich lunch since I was being careful with my money and ate with my lab mates outdoors at the Mensa, (like a cafeteria/ common eating area), the weather was fantastic!
After lunch, Moritz, the MD/PhD student in my lab, told me they were going to be practicing crypt culturing and that a mouse needed to be sacrificed and that since I was the newbie, I’d be sacing it. I honestly thought he was joking. I had never before worked with animals and at UCD prior to even looking at a mouse you have to take a bunch of animal handling/ safety courses. So it came as a surprise when he actually handed me the jar with isofluran to place the mouse in to put it to sleep. But I got it together and opened the mouse cage, picked up one of the two females in there by her tail, and popped her into the jar and sealed the lid, waited 5 mins and fished her out. She was fast asleep and Moritz showed me how to proceed. By the end of it he made sure I actually did the sacrificing. To be honest, I had thought about this moment a lot since the day I agreed to be a part of this program and project, I wasn’t sure if I would be squeamish or scared or an emotional basket case. But I followed instructions and had no emotional attachment what so ever. Which I am thankful for; it would be a shame if I couldn’t see past the fact that they are cute, furry balls, because they are bred to serve a purpose. A purpose which involves improving our understanding of diseases and finding ways to improve and save lives and thats all it is.
Moritz then dissected the mouse and gave me a crash course on mouse physiology. He and Andreas then further dissected the small intestine, large intestine and colon for the crypt culturing they were working on.
Friday, the boss was out, and since I wasn’t being productive in lab, I ran some errands and ended up reading in the Englischer Garten for 4 hours while the weather was magnificent. However I spent too much time in the sun and came home and passed out from a headache. I woke up at 8pm, watched a movie and fell back asleep.
On Saturday Lancelot and his French friends invited me to join them at the Breweries parade for the Oktoberfest. I had woken up late and had to wait to let the house keeper in so I declined. The housekeeper, who was supposed to come prior to us moving in but was on vacation, came around 9. To my surprise she spoke some English! She is a super sweet Romanian woman, Frau Köck. She did a great job and chatted me up. Turns out her sister lives in Sacramento! She kept asking me if I knew where Pagent Doctor was in Sac and I had no idea what she meant, finally she showed me the address…Pagent Dr….she thought Dr. was doctor..so cute. Anyway, she told me how to use vinegar, “essig” to get rid of the hard water buildup and I took her number so she could come back in a few months. She also told me to call her if I needed help getting around town…soo sweet!
After that I Skyped with my Dad, it was a one sided conversation…he couldn’t hear me..haha. Then I went to check out a bike and ended up buying it. I am now the proud owner of Peugeot ladies city bike! It needs come lube and a bell, basket, lock and light but its a fun ride. I picked it up in Northern Munich and rode home through the Englischer Garten…7kms! I swear I fall more in love with the garden every time I’m there. Its sooo green and woodsy and cool with the Eisbach flowing through!
Once I got home I realized I had no lock and so I lugged my bike up 2 flights of stairs. We have a lift here..however it starts on the 1st floor, not ground and it can fit two small sized people only.
Then I went shopping because all the grocery stores are close on Sunday, definitely not like America!
I made a big pot of chili and even some rice. After failed attempt #1 last weekend I decided to try microwaving it…much more successful! slightly messy but this time the rice was fully cooked.
Lancelot came back around dinner time and he told me all about the parade and the Oktoberfest. I was slightly sad I missed it. But I have at least 2 more Ofests to look forward to so its no biggie. I fell asleep to a crazy lightening and thunderstorm…I guess it happens here pretty often after several days of warm, clear weather.
Today, Sunday, I woke up fairly early…after taking down the ugly cat curtains and the dark purple black out shades, my new curtains let a lot of light in…not ideal when forcing yourself to sleep in. I made myself my breakfast and was excited about going for a run along the Isar and catching the city parade. Well, I got decked out in my Nikes and as I was headed out the door when the heavens parted and it started pouring. I hesitated and almost went back to bed…but I realized that thousands of people were scheduled to participate in this parade and that there was no way they were going to cancel it.
So I put on my rain jacket, got an umbrella and headed out! The parade started very close to the Klinikum and I found a great spot! I made some friends and shared my umbrella. The parade started off with the Münchner Kinder, daughter of one of the Oktoberfest tent owners, she led the procession. Then Germans from all around the Bayern region and the rest of the country proceeded, inter-dispersed where the big München Brauereien – Augustiner, Hofbräuhaus,Lowenbrau, Spaten, Pschorr Pilsner and Paulaner that I can recall. They were all in the parade the day before so I guess I didn’t miss much. Each brewery had horses pulling a bunch barrels on a cart adorned with beautiful flowers. I also got to see the Mayor of Munich and a bunch of dignitaries…my new friend from Dachau was explaining each float as they passed by.
There were bands and people dressed in lederhosen and beautiful dirndls and super cute kids in their mini versions. Expect for the cold rain, it was a great way to spend my morning.
After the parade I caught the train home and noticed that my station (the Ostbahnhof) is on the U5 line that goes straight to Theresienwiese, location of the Ofest. No need to switch trains or anything…you will thank me for it if you ever visit for Oktoberfest!
Once home I took a hot shower in my clean bathroom and ate my left over chili and was content! Now I have to work on my presentation for next week…Oh and on Wednesday I’m going to Oktoberfest with my lab! sans dirndl but still super excited, if its not raining I will take pics!
Oh and my address is now official, if you would like to send me snail mail and/ or care packages, which I would be sooo excited to receive, send it to :
